Shield Your Hardware from Dust & More

Dust. Flour. Lint. Oil. Powder. Regardless which industry you operate in, your computers, printers, monitors, microscopes and more are subjected to a massive number of particulates that can–and most definitely will–shorten their lifespan and hinder their efficiency. Which, of course, results in downtime for your company and significant repair and replacement costs. All of which can be easily avoided. To help your organization mitigate the damage, DustShield designs and builds high-quality enclosures that will shield your hardware in those harsh environments for years to come.

To help you understand how DustShield enclosures can shield your hardware, you need to understand how and why we build them the way we do. So, let’s dive into the design, materials and filtration systems.

How to Shield Your Hardware

Design

When it comes to enclosures, one size definitely does not fit all. Which is why more than half of the enclosures built at DustShield are custom-made to the customer’s specifications.

To start your custom enclosure solution, you can browse the DustShield enclosures catalog and see if any of the products listed closely resemble your hardware/equipment. If so, the next step would be to contact an enclosure specialist and submit the specifications for your equipment.

You can also visit the downloads page and pick the form for the hardware you want protected. Download it, fill it out and submit it to sales1@amprod.us or call 866.385.8194.

Your enclosure specialist will work with you to make sure the custom enclosure fits your needs by walking you through options and any specific requirements you need. For example, they’ll help you determine where to put the doors, whether you need shelves, etc.

And don’t worry, we have built a variety of enclosures to meet very specific needs. So, no matter how big or small you need your enclosure to be, and what hardware you want protected, we can help.

Materials

DustShield enclosures need to last a long time in rough environments, and that’s why we use heavy-duty materials.

Most companies who manufacturer industrial enclosures use steel for their products. Since it was formed in 1992, though, DustShield has preferred to use acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic for a number of reasons.

For one, ABS plastic is extremely tough, rigid and long-lasting. It won’t rust or corrode like metal, and it’s easy to clean with a basic soap and water solution.

In addition, ABS is more cost-effective to use than steel, which means that DustShield can manufacture tough-as-nails enclosures at a fraction of the cost of metal, without sacrificing quality.

Also, ABS plastic is Wi-Fi and radio frequency (RF) compatible, which means it won’t interfere with your machine’s frequency broadcast like metal can.

For the most part, the ABS plastic in a DustShield enclosure is 3/8” thick. Some areas are slightly thinner, if the application requires it.

The DustShield team uses computer numerical control (CNC) routers to cut out the plastic to exact measurements to ensure every panel and shelf fits together just right.

The windows/screen covers are made of ¼” acrylic or unbreakable polycarbonate (depending on the use), and hinges are made of stainless steel.

Filtration

You don’t want any dust to get into your hardware, but your electronics need air flow to operate without overheating.

Aside from this heavy-duty, water-resistant utility enclosure, every DustShield enclosure features a built-in disposable filter that will remove up to 98% of all airborne contaminants. It is six times more effective than permanent, washable electrostatic filters.

The filter is effective to .1 microns. For comparison, good surgical masks are effective to .3 microns, which means the DustShield filters will stop three times as small particulates as a surgical mask.

As long as you change the filter regularly (the timeframe will depend on your environment), you’ll enjoy smooth-running, dust-free hardware.

The DustShield team brings these pieces together to create an enclosure that is sure to shield your hardware for years to come. Every enclosure is NEMA 12 rated, which means it will protect your equipment against ingress of objects, fingers, falling dirt, settling dust and drips. You can always trust DustShield to protect your equipment from dust.
