DustShield enclosures need to last a long time in rough environments, and that’s why we use heavy-duty materials.
Most companies who manufacturer industrial enclosures use steel for their products. Since it was formed in 1992, though, DustShield has preferred to use acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic for a number of reasons.
For one, ABS plastic is extremely tough, rigid and long-lasting. It won’t rust or corrode like metal, and it’s easy to clean with a basic soap and water solution.
In addition, ABS is more cost-effective to use than steel, which means that DustShield can manufacture tough-as-nails enclosures at a fraction of the cost of metal, without sacrificing quality.
Also, ABS plastic is Wi-Fi and radio frequency (RF) compatible, which means it won’t interfere with your machine’s frequency broadcast like metal can.
For the most part, the ABS plastic in a DustShield enclosure is 3/8” thick. Some areas are slightly thinner, if the application requires it.
The DustShield team uses computer numerical control (CNC) routers to cut out the plastic to exact measurements to ensure every panel and shelf fits together just right.
The windows/screen covers are made of ¼” acrylic or unbreakable polycarbonate (depending on the use), and hinges are made of stainless steel.
You don’t want any dust to get into your hardware, but your electronics need air flow to operate without overheating.
Aside from this heavy-duty, water-resistant utility enclosure, every DustShield enclosure features a built-in disposable filter that will remove up to 98% of all airborne contaminants. It is six times more effective than permanent, washable electrostatic filters.
The filter is effective to .1 microns. For comparison, good surgical masks are effective to .3 microns, which means the DustShield filters will stop three times as small particulates as a surgical mask.
As long as you change the filter regularly (the timeframe will depend on your environment), you’ll enjoy smooth-running, dust-free hardware.
