Environmental Hazards of the Textile Industry

If you work in the textile industry, you know how much work goes into making a single pair of jeans, a batch of dresses, or yards of yarn. In order to keep up with the demand, it might seem like the machines never stop. With the turning of gears, the dyeing of fabrics, and the lifting of material comes airborne particles float through the air and onto you, your machines, and even your electronics. In fact, if you’ve been having trouble with your PC, desktop monitor, or label printer, it’s time to protect them from the environmental hazards of the textile industry.

Environmental Hazards of the Textile Industry

Effects on Label Printers

Anyone who has dried a load of laundry in their life knows that fabrics produce lint. The fuzz you remove off the lint screen is actually made of tiny pieces of fabric, which float away in the air and gather as dust. As you can imagine, in a factory that works primarily with fabric, there’s no shortage of microscopic particulate made of tiny pieces of fabric. From short circuit issues to destroyed print heads, the microscopic particulate can decrease print quality or even stop your printing process altogether.

If your facility relies on a barcode system to sort fabric, it’s no secret that barcodes must be clearly legible and print quickly for a smooth workflow. If you want to avoid the headache of dealing with a malfunctioning barcode printer, protect it with an enclosure.

What to Do: To protect your label printer, purchase an enclosure with a fan/filter system. Think of the enclosure like a miniature house for yourprinter. Instead of protecting it from the rain, cold, and sun, it protects it from the environmental hazards of the textile industry, like dust and harsh temperatures.

Effects on PCs and Monitors

It’s easy to take a computer for granted . . . until it stops working. Unplanned or forced downtime in the production industry leads to loss of profit, so it is important to understand the best way to protect your computer system. Most computers consist of two main components: the monitor and the actual computer itself (usually a desktop tower). Airborne particles can wreak havoc on both your monitor and your desktop tower. This dust can make its way into these electronics and cause them to overheat or develop a short circuit. In addition, some fabrics (like denim) consist of coarse particles that can scratch your monitor, which creates a huge problem if the monitor is a touchscreen.

What to Do: Purchase a computer enclosure with touch-screen monitor protection. When choosing an enclosure for a computer, look for one with a built-in fan/filter system. The best type of enclosure is one that filters out at least 98 percent of airborne contaminants. In addition, you can add a security upgrade to protect your company’s sensitive data and workflow. And if moisture is a concern, contact DustShield to discuss air conditioning options.
