Measuring for an Enclosure

A computer enclosure is like a clean room that surrounds and protects your computer equipment, defending it against dripping oils and lubricants, shielding it from dust and abrasive particles, cooling the hot components with modern fans, and allowing it to breathe fresh air. Since space is at a premium on most factory floors, it is important that you measure your equipment carefully, checking that it can fit inside your chosen enclosure without occupying excessive space. Measuring for an enclosure is very simple, especially when you use the guides that we’ve supplied below. Simply grab a tape measure, a pen, and a piece of paper, and let’s get started.

How to Measure Your Equipment

When measuring for an enclosure, be sure to hold your tape measure at the very edge of the equipment and try to get as exact a measurement as possible. Below we’ve listed instructions for how to measure a central processing unit, a monitor, a printer, and a keyboard. For some enclosures, you will only need to measure one piece of equipment; others will require the measuring of multiple pieces of equipment.

How to Measure a Central Processing Unit (CPU):

  1. Measure CPU height.
  2. Measure CPU width.
  3. Measure CPU depth.

How to Measure a Monitor:

  1. Measure monitor height.
  2. Measure monitor width.
  3. Measure monitor depth.
  4. Measure screen height.
  5. Measure screen width.
  6. Measure monitor height to bottom of screen.

How to Measure a Printer:

  1. Measure label printer height.
  2. Measure label printer width.
  3. Measure label printer depth.
  4. Measure label printer height to label outlet.
  5. Measure width of the label outlet.
  6. Measure left side of label printer to left side of label outlet.
  7. Measure distance from left side of label printer to top-left side of hinged door.

How to Measure a Keyboard:

Simply measure the keyboard width. Most DustShield enclosures will accommodate keyboards up to 20.25″ wide.

If you’re interested in any of the following DustShield products, click on their name to view their spec sheets and measuring guide. There, you will find an abundance of valuable information, including the enclosure’s dimensions, color options, upgrade options, and advantageous features. On the last page, you will find the measuring guide.

To ensure that your equipment fits into its enclosure properly, submit a measuring guide for each unique enclosure to the specialists at DustShield. After listing your company name and contact, please measure the equipment in inches, and send the dimensions by e-mailing us at sales@www.www.dustshield.com or faxing us at 417-736-9873. Each measure guide includes a diagram, so that you can clearly see which dimensions are required. If you have any trouble measuring for an enclosure or filling out the guide, just give us a call at 800-587-9557.

All of the following enclosures utilize industrial plastic that is 3/8″ thick to ensure maximum structural stability, and they offer NEMA 12 protection. Some of the enclosures allow for monitor upgrades, in which the enclosure size is increased to accommodate a larger monitor. In addition, for some enclosures, CPUs with larger dimensions will require a custom, built-to-order enclosure.

Speaking of which, all of the maximum sizes listed below apply to standard products. If your equipment won’t fit within a standard product, don’t worry. Our team can work with you to design and fabricate an industrial enclosure that matches your equipment’s size flawlessly and meets the demands of your environmental specifications.
